Specializing primarily in family law, John F. Mills has lent his expertise to clients for over 30 years. He is well known throughout the area for his vast experience in domestic relations, private adoption cases, and adoption-related litigation. He is also skilled in the areas of alternate dispute resolution and frequently mediates and arbitrates domestic cases.
Mr. Mills is a Certified Adoption Attorney and lectures extensively at seminars and as a guest lecturer at Michigan State University – Detroit College of Law, the University of Detroit Law School and Cooley Law School on private adoption and adoption-related issues. He has authored several articles on adoption issues, most recently having authored the chapter on Paternity, Adoption and Surrogacy for the 6th edition of the ICLE publication, Michigan Family Law. He is a Certified Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, a national organization recognizing expertise in Family Law.
Actively involved in the development and dissemination of state law, Mr. Mills’ recent articles include “Alternate Dispute Resolution: When To Use It And When to Avoid It,“ Michigan Family Law Journal, March, 2002; “Safe Delivery of Newborns Law - A True Solution or a Dismal Failure?” Michigan Family Law Journal, January, 2002; and “The Judgment of Divorce,” Michigan Family Law Journal Special Edition entitled "A Guide-Book for the Newly Divorced Person," March, 2004.
He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and serves as a member of the Representative Assembly. He formely chaired the Adoption Law Committee of the Family Law Section of the State Bar and is a former Section Chairperson. Mr. Mills is a past president of the Oakland University Alumni Association and currently serves as a Director of the Oakland University Foundation. He is also a member of the Michigan State University College of Law Alumni Association. He has been named one of the "Best Lawyers in America," "Best Lawyers in Detroit," and a "Super Lawyer." He served in the United States Navy and is a Vietnam veteran.
John F. Mills has acheived many accomplishments throughout his time with WWRP, P.C. Some of them include:
- Appointment to the Board of Managers for the Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (September 2009)
- Authored the 2009 Supplement to the Michigan Family Law Benchbook, Second Edition, a publication of the Michigan Institute of Continuing Legal Education, the legal education provider for the State Bar of Michigan.
- Authored the 2009 Supplement to Chapter 20 on Adoption Law in Michigan Family Law, Sixth Edition, a publication of the Michigan Institute of Continuing Legal Education, the legal education provider for the State Bar of Michigan.
- Reappointed to the Family Law Advisory Board of the Michigan Institute of Continuing Legal Education, the legal education provider for the State Bar of Michigan.
- Served as a speaker at the 7th Annual Family Law Institute in November 2008 for the Michigan Institute of Continuing Legal Education, the legal education provider for the State Bar of Michigan.
- Served as moderator and speaker for a seminar on Adoption and Paternity for the Michigan Institute of Continuing Legal Education, the legal education provider for the State Bar of Michigan. (June 2010)
- Successfully mediated a multi-million dollar divorce case involving issues of intellectual property, division of business entity interests holding intellectual property and significant real and personal property issues (November 2009) Mediation held over five days.
- Served as a speaker for an advanced-level family law seminar presented by the Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (May 2010).
