Hudson Award, for his extraordinary service to the bench and bar.
Mr. Plunkett is an accomplished trial and appellate attorney in complex litigation matters and appeals in both State and Federal Court. He has successfully represented parties in a wide range of cases, including contract litigation, partnership dissolution, trusts and estates, employment, and complicated family law matters. In municipal law, he has represented developers as well as communities such as Sanilac, Clare and Lapeer Counties, and Groveland, Huron, Mundy, Deerfield and Charleston Townships. He is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in Michigan, the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Prior to joining Williams, Williams, Rattner & Plunkett, Mr. Plunkett served as Law Clerk to Chief Justice T.M. Kavanagh of the Michigan Supreme Court (1963-1965). He was elected Oakland County prosecuting attorney in 1968 and was the youngest elected prosecuting attorney in the United States in a major metropolitan area. In 1970, he was named one of the "Five Outstanding Young Men in Michigan" by the Michigan Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Plunkett was considered by many the "Dean" of the State Bar of Michigan, having served as a board member for 18 years from 1985 to 2003. He was President of the Oakland County Bar Association from 1989-90 and a director from 1981-90. He is a member of the American Bar Association. In law school, he was a senior editor of the Law Journal. He is the author of "Cross-Examination for the Defense" published by the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. He has lectured on trial practice for state bar sections and the Institute of Continuing Legal Education.
Mr. Plunkett has also been active in community organizations as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Cranbrook Educational Community, a board member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Oakland County and Vice Chair of the Oakland County Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed by Governors Milliken and Blanchard to five special commissions involving law-related issues on legislation and executive branch management.
